Rather nauseatingly, I still don’t have record player in the place where I’m living. Not that I have my remaining records either, but still, it would be nice to be able to check out my haul of stuff from Brazil. To be honest, I could have made a case for buying hundreds more things than I did. But having just given away or sold a few hundred records (it’s true, I bought just under 300 back from the US with me), I wasn’t in a mood to acquire too many more. But old habits die hard. Here’s what I got, most of it as yet unheard by me (btw, yes, I got a digital camera). After I have had a chance to listen to everything, I will make a special page on my haul from the trip…

Compilation: 'Super Erotica volume 2' (LP; New Records; 1969-1980)

It's not clear withere or not this is a straight compilation, or Brazilian cover versions of the songs. Obviously, I hope it's the latter.

Compilation: 'Motel Music' (LP; Radar Discos; 1969-1982)

I couldn't resist this for 1 Real (about 35 cents or 22p). It's a compilation of sex-related music. Pretty ridiculous, but there's some stuff on here I haven't heard.

I listened to this in the store. A really interesting (to me, anyway!) Brazilian take on late 60s easy listening instrumental albums. It has some odd jazzy instrumentation, and features 'love is blue', 'don't sleep in the subway' and 'you only live twice', as well as a few Beatles numbers. I wish I had managed to find more records like this.

Claudette Soares: 'Claudette' (LP; Beverley; 1969)

My copy isn't in such great condition, but I figured this was worth a go.

An 80s reissue of this album. Shortly after buying it, I saw it for the same price on CD. Still, it's an entertaining cover...

Looks interesting. Can't wait to hear it....

I have never heard of this artist, and was unable to dig up any information about the record. But I was able to listen to it in the shop where I bought it. Happily, it sounded superb - dark, jazzy, and rhythmical, with some cool vocals. The cover is a nice Command Records rip off.

Orquestra reginda por carioca: 'Samba Oba!' (LP; Imperial; 1964)

This appears to be a budget LP, and I saw a few copies of it on my travels.

A Brazilian group playing pop/rock hits of the time (such as 'california dreaming', 'you won't see me'), sung in Portuguese. My hopes aren't that high for this one, but I couldn't resist giving it a go.

The Youngsters: 'Mah-Na, Mah-Na/Eu Te Amo' (45; Polydor; 1969)

An interesting combination of songs - Piero Umiliani and Serge Gainsbourg. Although this 1 Real copy is pretty trashed, with this combination of composers, I can't see how the record can fail to be of some interest...

Unknown: 'The Lotus Sound' (LP; Parlophone; 1972)

I totally took a chance on this because it looks cool and has a Keith Mansfield penned number, 'a touch of excitement,' on it. It's not clear if this is a Brazilian recording or a domestic pressing of a UK LP. Again, I can't wait to hear it...

Hello. I came back. It has been a funny couple of weeks.

I did manage to find a decent number and range of records in Brazil, but since I’m still getting my life back together here in London, I haven’t been able to play them yet.

This is a shame, because there’s some interesting stuff, some Brazilian, some just pressed in Brazil, and a few that have nothing to do with Brazil whatsoever. In this latter category is a bizarre 1970 motorola promotional record promoting the hip, right now sound.

Other items included a nice Brazilian pressing (on the equipe label!) of the notorious 101 strings play the sounds of love record. In Curitiba, there was a nice store that let me listen to the LPs, so I got some previously unheard of Brazilian jazz and pop easy listening records from the 60s. I will report more on these in due course.

I have been able to listen to the CDs I got. I didn’t go overboard, but did splash out on the 21-cd Elis Regina box set (detailed reaction to come), some Marcos Valle, and several other nice discs in the Odeon 100 anos series.

This is a dull post on a dial up connection. I have a new computer, which is great. I’ll tell you what though, that pop up message problem on Windows computers seems to have got much worse – I was still signing up for my dial-up account when I started receiving them! The people who send them (the gist is: these messages are so annoying. Go to this site and we will sell you the information on how to not receive them – I got this same message a dozen or so times) are utter arseholes. It makes me sad to think that people want money so much that they will piss off millons of people to get some money from 10 of them. Anyway, I was able to look up how to disable the feature in a couple of minutes; if you have a problem, here’s how to do it
