I am an addict I think. 4 CDs bought since I last posted. First, some feedback on the vinyl I bought – the pressings were a bit dodgy, but dustygroove were nice about it. So I’m getting a refund on the Jorge Ben and some credit on the Elis Regina (which had a skip). Both are excellent, but the Jorge Ben record was so badly pressed that it was hardly playable. The Claudia LP is great! Some really really cool stuff. The Ramsay Lewis thing is cool, but not that cool. Well, there are about 4 killer tracks on it, which isn’t bad. The rest of the stuff is ok, just not so upbeat, and that’s what I was in the mood for when I was listening to it.

I picked up two great compilations used on CD last night – ‘Buddism’ by Roy Budd and ‘Mo’plen Brazilia’ (italian comp. on IRMA)

‘Buddism’ is a nice (and probably superior) companion to the ‘Rebirth of the Budd’ compilation.
Both contain the classic ‘Get Carter, but while ‘rebirth’ focuses more on the pop instrumental albums which Roy Budd did on the Pye label in the late 60s, ‘Buddism’ is exclusively cuts from his soundtracks. Some tracks are incredibly modern sounding, and most are extremely cool, slightly in the vein of Lalo Schifrin’s best work.

‘Mo’Plen Brazilia’ is the CD with Italian and Brazilian footballers on the cover. Although some tracks are duplicated from other Mo’Plen and Easy Tempo CDs, this is definitely one of the more successful compilations of late 60s Italian Bossa-influenced tracks I own. And the sound quality, (which was terrible on ‘metti, una bossa a cena’) is pretty good. Well worth checking out if you get the chance.

And then at lunchtime – Shirley Scott – talkin verve – killer late 60s/early 70s organ jazz; very enjoyable. and Da Lata – ok, well, this one was cheap so I bought it, but I’m not sure if it’s my thing. Modern Brazilian stuff with samples. Kind of almost cool, but it will have to grow on me…

That’s it…. Oh, and musical taste has reached a milestone – 50 members! I’m quite pleased with how it’s going.

ok. well today I will kick off with what I will mostly be doing here. Yep, talking about records which I buy. Today I got 2 shipments – a stack of stuff I bought from Dustygroove, and a record I got on ebay.

Most of this stuff is on vinyl, so I haven’t yet listened to it. Still, here’s what I got:

1. Dustygroove:
Howard Roberts – Jaunty Jolly!/Guilty!! (2 on 1 CD)

This is really pretty cool. 2 great pop jazz albums from his late 60s period on Capitol. The tracks range through jazz/pop/bossa. Some of his guitar playing can get a little noodley, but overall the sound is very cool. Dave Grusin plays the organ, and this was back when he was cool and doing soundtracks for stuff like ‘The Graduate’, so it’s cool.

2. Dustygroove:
Jorge Ben – Forca Bruta, Elis Regina – Elis in London, Claudia – voce Claudia voce (all Brasilian vinyl reissues of dubious origin – ie. bootlegs)

I’ve never heard the Ben or Regina in their entirety, but they contain some tracks which I think are incredible. I bought the Claudia because it contains a cover of Marcos Valle’s Garra, which is a big fave of mine. Let’s hope they all live up to my expectations!

3. Dustygroove:
Compilations – Bossa galore – lounge at cinevox

This seemed a bargain at $12. I’m not sure if it is yet, but it sounds nice. Italian soundtrack bossas from the 60s and 70s. More on this when I have checked it out properly.

4. Ebay: Ramsay Lewis – Inside Ramsey Lewis 2LP

I haven’t listened to this yet, but it looks like a great compilation of his late 60s jazzy piano pop stuff. His records are everywhere, which probably gives off the impression that they aren’t much good. All the ones I’ve heard are great though. Nice swingin pop stuff, produced/arranged by Richard Evans, who was one of those midas touch guys. This comp has 20 tracks, all of which are from the 1966-1970 period. I’m looking forward to checking this out.

If anyone is reading this (and since I didn’t tell anyone about it, I doubt they are), let me know if you think I’m a boring freak…

cheers!

Sweet and Lovely by Erroll Garner. Super track. I must post a recommendation at musicaltaste.net

My CD player is on random play. I just got a lovely track from the ‘girl from uncle’ soundtrack. Doesn’t sound quite the same with the beats from next door pounding through though. Anyway, enough. I think we’re going to go out to the cinema for a decadent 1.30 showing.

Now it’s saturday. I had some lovely sleeps. It was nice. I’m listening to a very raucous Joy division live version. The guy next door is listening to house of pain or something. Wanker

ok, I’m working on my own design for this page, but everything is going well. I’ve learned quite a bit about blogger this afternoon. And I like it! Although I imagine this is going to be a pretty boring one – I’m that prick with glasses who buys records every day and talks about them, and who is fixated with the word egg. Until later….

This is quite a cool interface. I will have to delete all this crap some time though, or people will think I’m fixated with the word ‘egg’.
