I didn't actually know what to expect, knowing very little about Ahmad Jamal other than that his records seem to be easier to come by than many other Cadet label artists. Also, he is famous for a funky 1974 album, 'jamaica'. Anyway, he seems to be a great jazz pianist who often has a very cool sound and some nice Lalo Schifrin-style moves. On this album he is 'with voices', lots of them. So many, in fact, that they dominate the album slightly, making it sound like a cross between the Ray Charles Singers (who recorded on the Command label) and the more jazzy Gals & Pals. The result is not always successful, but the upbeat numbers are great, especially the opener, 'wild is the wind' - a unique take on a great song. The rest of the album may take a while for me to appreciate... |
