Mr. McCoy has become my latest musical obsession. I'm not entirely sure why. He's not madly innovative; I just like the feel and musical balance of his records very much. He's a jazz vibist, who recorded on the Prestige label in the 1960s. This is the only one of his albums to have made it onto CD.

It's a beautiful package, with great sound and the typically great presentation you find on Japanese releases, like a complete facsimile of the front and back cover of the record.

As to the music itself, it's very pleasant, simple, slightly bluesey instrumental jazz/pop. The group is quite small, with just bass, piano, and drums accompanying the vibes. There are just 6 tracks. 'Yesterdays' and 'That's all' are both slower, longer numbers, which are very effective. 'Spider man' itself is a Latin Jazz- style original. The version of 'The girl from Ipanema' is rather nice, with some interesting variations on the tune. The opening track, 'Hav' Mercy' features Dave Pike-style scatting in the background, where presumeably Freddie is singing the tune to himself. 'Speak out, Deagan' is another bluesey McCoy original.

All in all, it's a nice album. They could have fitted three of his albums on this CD, though! This is only the second McCoy release I've managed to find so far, and this certainly keeps me feeling that I want to have them all. But you know, that could just be because I have an eccentric and and irrational completetist streak when I get into a new musician.
