In spite of its 1969 date, it is not produced by the esteemed Richard Evans; instead someone called Gene Barge does the honors. He really doesn't do a bad job though, as this is a very enjoyable LP. The first track - the 7 minute long 'free delivery'- is a little overlong and overproduced for my taste, although it is still very pleasant. 'Free and Easy' is excellent, a nice soul jazz number with occasional vocals, which will fit very nicely onto the compilation of tracks in that vein which I'm planning. Other highlights include 'Nitty Gritty', which is very funky in a way reminiscent of some of Ramsey Lewis's work from the same period. The quieter tracks are very cool also, with some top qualitiy session work from Cadet regulars like Phil Upchurch and Morris Jennings. I look forward to checking out more of Odell Brown's stuff. |
