Post a comment Search on Ebay Search on GEMM | | Ginette is Canadian, and the record is mostly arranged by Johnny Harris, famous in the world of delicado for producing those amazing Shirley Bassey tracks and releasing his own fine Movements LP. A very promising easy listening pop arranger basically.
This LP doesn't disappoint on the production front, with some fine, crisp, percussive arrangements, and some trademark Johnny Harris touches (for example, the end of 'windmills of your mind' shimmers like Johnny's own 'footprints on the moon'. 'Don't let me be misunderstood' is a standout, and none of the tracks are without charm. 'You've made me so very happy' has a very hip arrangement and would go quite nicely with Scott Walker's version of 'stormy'.
However, Ginette's voice is a bit of an acquired taste. She reminds me slightly of Keely Smith, who is a great singer of standards (I still rate her 60s Capitol work with Nelson Riddle and Billy May very highly), but whose slightly trilly voice probably wouldn't suit more rocky productions like this. Hence even though she's quite a good singer, in the context of these arrangements you often think 'Hey Ginette, can you give it a rest'. |
