This another one of those albums which I have adored, but probably just because it was the best thing I had at the time, if you know what I mean. I'm not sure it's generally recognized as one of this duo's (most famous for the classic instrumental 'sleepwalk') best albums. However, I love it. The theme is the sea, so all the songs, two of which are originals, are related. Probably the highlight is the title track, 'Offshore', written by the fascinating harmonica player, Leo Diamond (his 'subminal sounds' is a remarkable record which I'll have to review here some time). I also love this version of 'Ebb Tide'. I don't know exactly what it is about Santo & Johnny that ensnares me - I just really like the drama and seriousness which hangs around their best tracks. They are sometimes guilty of playing really badly out of tune, but thankfully that's not true on this album. The entire LP has a slightly old world feel, much more like an album of the 50s than one of the 60s - the backing vocals are ethereal, high and female. There are also lots of nice beach/wave sound effects. I would probably only recommend this to S&J or hawaiian music fans. I'd recommend it pretty highly to them, though.
