Post a comment Search on Ebay Search on GEMM | | I am so behind the times! Since I was uninterested and unaware when this record came out, it's interesting to listen to it now. It really sounds like a prototype 'lounge/dance music' crossover record, with similar influences to many of today's popular downtempo acts - e.g. Thievery Corporation. In particular, Towa seems to have been interested in the electric sitar. One track samples Dave Pike's sitar anthem, 'Mathar', and even on some of the heavily bossa themed tracks, the sitar creeps in.
This is a fun record - much more trashy and diverse than some of the hypercool electronic stuff coming out now, but better for it. Many of the tracks have a modern soul influence which isn't exactly to my taste, but some really shine, such as 'Batucada'(featuring Bebel Gilberto; 5 years before 'tanto tempo', but sounding pretty much the same), 'obrigado' (featuring Bebel again; also with Arto Lindsay) and 'la douce vie', a slow, lush bossa themed track featuring Maki Nomiya of Pizzicato 5. |
